Review: Flight Simulator X

Ever since I saw the first announcement of Flight Simulator X I was really excited to play it. I'm no plane nut or anything... I'm not even sure WHY I was so hyped up over it. Now, after playing Flight Simulator X for approximately 8 minutes, I am happy to say that I am even more excited about uninstalling it.

When the game is first loaded up, it asks you if you're a newb, if you've played before, or if you're actually a real-world pilot. As far as this game is concerned, I am a newb, so that's what I selected. Like so many other games lately, I assumed that MSFSX would select the best default settings for my computer. The game then started loading, and kept loading, and loading... After what seemed like forever I was left staring at a horrible screen, reminiscent of Wing Commander back in the early 90's. Unfortunately for MS, the original Wing Commander looks like a next-gen title after playing this shit.

I exited, reconfigured my video settings to medium/high, and reloaded the game. I must admit, the clouds actually looked great. To really put the icing on the cake I could enjoy them each individually in all of their 5 frames per second glory. To my surprise everything else still looked like it was covered in a thick layer of 4-bit poo.

So after having some minor seizures, I decided to try to get my airplane thing off of the ground. The tutorial reminded me that I needed to press period, then F1, then F4. Of course! It's so easy and intuitive I just couldn't help myself. I actually managed to get the thing off of the "ground". It was definitely a unique feeling of flying in this game. So unique that I wanted to plummet to my death to the blurry textures below.

This is where another great feature of MSFSX comes in. When you crash your plane, they trick you into thinking you also crashed your computer! After watching my computer screen puke all over itself for a minute, I was rewarded with a dazzling display of effects.

It's nice to see that MS is at least doing some forward thinking for this game. Direct from the Readme:
"Flight Simulator X is designed to run on the Windows Vista operating system. Flight Simulator X was released prior to the completion of Windows Vista." Directly afterwards, the readme gives you an easy 5-point guide on how you must disable certain totally unrelated "features" of Vista in order to even play the game. Wow.

Wrapping it up, I actually recommend everybody try out this game. There is no other feeling that is quite as satisfying or rewarding as looking at the final window of the uninstallation process.

What hardware were you running this on?

The fact that it's a vista game really stinks since vista isn't even out yet, or even close to being "ready" to ship (once it ships, I'm confident it still won't be ready for shipping).

hw

AMD64 3400+ @ 2.4ghz, 1GB OCZ DDR, 256MB ATI x850PRO

(not the best system but by no means is it a bad system! my fps with good settings in company of heroes or cs:s is still pretty awesome)

good game

its a good game and i brought a new machine with dual core 2. All the other specs on the machine are high...but i dont know why, its very powerful game! And if you set everything too high it ends up crashing and restarting the computer.

Good game though

LISTEN AND LEARN

There are issues with this game than microsoft will fix any time soon. I have an intell 6750 extreme processor with 2 gigs of pc 6400 memory, nvidia 8600 graphics card. I still have system crashes when trying to play the game. The box says that you only need 1 gig processor. This game is rediculously heavy on any system and certainly not worth waiting for your system to reboot. I have every edition of flight sim and have enjoyed most. This game will go in the e-bay pile before too many people realize that its not worth $10.00

LOL.... All you guys are too

LOL....

All you guys are too funny. I have this running a quadcore q6600, 2 gigs ram, 8600, and its runs fine, everything is cranked on ultra high and draw distance to max.

Somthing is either wrong with your hardware or the windows operating system ( which is the USERS FAULT, not microsofts ) if mine works fine on XP and yours doesnt with the same stuff, you must have got a different XP install disk! (SARCASTIC) im sure 75% of you have viruses/spyware on your machines, or don't know how to maintain your computer system correctly, because i do know how to and i have ZERO PROBLEMS...... but come on guys, keep blaming microsoft though!! too bad they are here with us until after you die and after your kids die and their kids! gets used to it cry babies.

Have fun crashing! hahaha

Give it a chance

Hey guys, I almost gave up on the program too but then I started thinking, If I'm having all these problems but there are people out there who aren't having any...then "I" must be doing something wrong. I completely reinstalled my OS, got the latest drivers for all my hardware. Updated the entire OS (WinXP 64-bit) Overclocked (slightly) my CPU and GPU. I then installed only FSX, SP1 & Acceleration just to see what would happen. I ran a defrag (of the system files too) once all was installed. I was almost floored when I did the Aluetian Cargo run and hit Framerates above 145 with the slider maxed! I'VE BEEN A HAPPY CAMPER EVER SINCE! My frames have not been below 15 for anything, even flying in Seattle or Tokyo.
Here's my Setup:

AMD 6400+ (CPU) overclocked to 3.45G
nvidia 8800GTX (GPU) overclocked to 650mhz
4GB 800MHZ DDR2 (RAM)
ASUS M2N32-SLI (Mainboard)
Dell 2005FP (Monitor)

I never bother with anymore of the many tweaks that are offered on the Web. I never really noticed any difference using them before anyway. Except for one, you want this tweak!
Change this value under [Display] to True----WideViewAspect=False

Don't give up yet on FSX, most of the problems people are seeing is from a bad configuration.

FSX

seriously u guys i have NO clue what your all talking about.... i got FSX to upgrade from FS2004. well actually leme back up on that...my computer first off:
2ghz pentium 4
1 gig SRD RAM
Radeon 9550 256mb video card
80 gig HD

And SOMEHOW the game runs smoothly without ANY lag at medium settings.... i have NO clue whats up with u guys with the quad core processors and 4 gigs of ram and stuff lol... personally...this game at medium settigns looks the exact same as FS2004 at medium settings. the only difference is upgraded ATC and when u pull up fast or push down u can "see" the G-forces....have you all tried installing the Patch? speeds the game up a ton

Gameplay aside, more

Gameplay aside, more advanced gamers can actually tell if a game has good FPS or not. Noobs with P4's and 9550's claiming the game 'runs smoothly without ANY lag' should be quite glad they are too naive to realize how shitty bad games really are. Good luck with that.

Also: "My frames have not been below 15 for anything, even flying in Seattle or Tokyo." LOL nice - if you blink hella fast then this will seem super-smooth.

replaced my old computer and

replaced my old computer and bought a whole new set with 512mb graphics card,core2duo,2gb ram and a joystick!. it's been a week and the game runs even slower when i lower the settings to minimal:( think i should look for another computer!

don't bother getting another

don't bother getting another computer

it's the game's fault, I promise

This game is poorly made!

This game is poorly made.Period.What do you expect coming from Micro$lut?
Flys choppy always and has huge video problems.
Wish someone would make this game playable.
Like a HUGE 10000 megabyte PATCH!

Been flying FS since SubLogic days

I got my PPL when I was 17 ... I'm 67 now. I started flying FS on an Apple // when it first came out. I have owned every version of FS. Every version of FS is coded for a macine that doesn't exist yet. Technology will eventually mature to run the FS version acceptably. For real world pilots FS 2000 was the first to actually make a challenging run at the real world aspects of flying. FS 2004 is very good for this and a number of pilots I know regularly use this to sharpen their skills just before a check ride. (this is of course with 3rd party aircraft, weather, and scenery added).

My thoughts ... FS takes a superior machine to work well.
If you fly it like it's real and not just fooling around... it's pretty good. (pitch/trim control still needs work and FS ILS is a little jumpy)
For new IFR pilots it's great. If you can fly an FS IFR check ride inside the minimums, you will do fine on the test. FS is (to a degree) harder to fly than the real thing.

I have to agree

I am (was) a fan of the MSFS series. I do have to say that FS9 runs and looks loads better than FSX. It's truly disappointing. I can not get anything over 20FPS no matter what settings I do. I have cut off the special effects, the water effects and turned off the scenery (so no buildings and no trees). If I turn anything else off (or further down from default than it is), then there is no point. I've also done some of the various 'tweaks' already found on the web. It's a shame I cannot return this game to the store. I really do not feel that it is worth the money I spent on it.
My hardware specs are not as good as the one above, but for as intensive as F.E.A.R. is, I can max that game out and be at or above 30fps. It is a 3.0GHz P4 HT, 1GB PC3200, and an Nvidia 6800Ultra 256MB.

Flight Simulator X

Have you seen the option TARGET FRAMERATE. If that says 20 fps it cant get any higher then 20 fps.
I have a AMD 3800+X2 with 2048mb of DDR400, and a nvidia 7800GT
and cant get over 10 fps when i toggle med. low. or higher, and MSF2004 looks better then that... and there i get over 85 fps..
I dont understand, uninstalling was a relief, good thing i downloaded this crap.

MK

After two weeks of testing I

After two weeks of testing I sold it in an internet auction. I am using MSFS series since 2000 and I haven't seen such a shit so far.

FS X on Vista

hey,

i see fs x runs well. i was a little too ambitious and set everything on high or ultra high @ 1280x1024x32 on my 6800 ultra... well i only got something like 5 frames/sec. secondly, they get you to disable those features on vista only if you are running in windowed mode. they do this because aero glass is very gpu-heavy because of all the 3d and transparency effects. if you run fs x w/ aero glass, you will defineitely have a performance slowdown because your graphics card is rendering your aero-glass gui as well as fs x. they give you the option of auto-disabling it when running fs x though in the properties tag on the fsx.exe file.

...

and this isn't retarded because....?

Brilliant review, very funny

That review pretty much sums it up, well funny too....

Disappointing!

Count me as those who are in the uninstalling category. I have had all previous Microsoft flight simulators and really enjoyed them. I have a pretty powerful computer so I was really eager to see all of the new functions. Right, all I get are system crashes and slow, very slow frame rates.

Learn from my "deluxe" mistake of $70 Don't waste your money on this product!

FSX...

Honestly...FSX works brilliantly for me...best bucks I've ever spent on a game...I guess you need a computer that can handle the graphics to really enjoy it...This is the only blog on the internet that dishes it...I say FSX is the best...I have the comp that that handle it and i'm not complaining...and if your mad because you spend all this cash on it...news flash! Bring it back...until then keep complaining on how bad you THINK it is...and as for me i get to go enjoy all the benefits on having a computer that works!!!

AND YOUR POINT IS ?????????

AND YOUR POINT IS ?????????

AMD 3700+ ATI X800XL 512MB

AMD 3700+ ATI X800XL 512MB OCZ 1GB DDR400 RAM works at above 30fps with all settings medium high its great!

It runs better oon Vista

It runs better oon Vista than in XP, maybe that's why spome of you are finding it too slow. Yes it's very gpu and cpu intensive but better that you can get it to play better as new hardware comes along than be stuck with a game that has nothing much to offer until their next release. I can't wait to upgrade to see it in maximum settings, until then the missions appear to be smoother to play than the freeflight ones, maybe due to their locations who knows.
Best sim from Msoft so far.

ATI rocks

My friend has an ATI video card that is AGP 8x and a Intel Celeron Processor and gets great frmae rates! I have played it and it runs super smooth and the graphics are amazing. Sorry to all of thoose who have a "faster" system and dont get acceptable frames rates. :P"

Vista and FSX or 9?

Yeah, unfortunately I'm using Vista Ultimate and not a happy camper with it.

Had FSX on it, but too slow, miss the panning outside the cockpit, half my planes wouldn't work, and so on.

Loaded my old FS9 and seems to work but weird thing happens. The planes all go dark skinned for some reason.

I have a screen shot on my site www.tomax7.com/thoughts/flightsim9.htm

Initally when picking a plane it is normal, bright/white skinned and then when I click on "FLY NOW" the screen flickers and then comes back to this same screen but the plane is darker. Any plane, including the built in ones.

I'm using an Acer 1.8 duo, with 2GB of Ram, so it isn't a slouch. Intel 946GZ video 384 RAM.

Dark Planes

I have the same problem with my set up! The bad part is that is the same problem with FS9. My work around is to change the filter setting each time I have the problem, but doing that sucks! Have you come up with any info yet?

MS patch for Vista and FsimX

I had the same screen flicker prob. Interim fix is totally disable your 2nd display, it worked for me with just one display, but clearly not what I had in mind :) I logged a bug with Micro$loth and they actually came through after several painful weeks of fighting through layers of outsourced tech support.

The hotfix was just released:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933590
and seems to work. At least, I can run with 2 monitors. Sadly the cursor is now black instead of white, which means it's invisible unless inside a sub-window on the 2nd display.

SFX

Best SFX is the best yet.
I running it on a pc with AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core 5000+, 2 gig ram, Nvdia 7900GS video card with 256MB.
I am able to run FSX with all sliders set to Ultra High. I'm getting excelent frame rates around 30 fps.
My PC is dual booted XP Pro and Vista Premium. I get better performance running FSX on Vista.

Best review so far :))

Although your review is based on frustration and not giving the game a chance, I must admit I agree with you, and you gave me a good laugh :)
There should be a huge, red sign on the box of this game;
WARNING! If you are not interested in hours of work and tweaking to make this look good, please find another game!

And you might add; Add-ons are highly recommended, and when you start to find it interesting and nice, the price has double-doubled.

FSX is NOT a game for newb, thats for sure.

Even Im an experienced FS-enthusiast, this game has given me lots of frustration and overclocking my head.

This review is spot on imho.

This review is spot on imho. I've got a Quad core extreme, 4Gb ram, GF8800 Ultra, a pair of Raid0 raptors (running Vista). After getting lots of pink and green spodges, crashes, and general crap, i managed to get the game running (only in free flight, the missions all crash my system). With settings on their highest i don't get a playable frame rate. When settings are put down to the lowest, I still don't get a playable frame rate. The difference between the Highest and lowest graphics is slightly lost on me. They both look crap.

Another bug bear is that it doesn't let you choose the partition it installs itself to. Mildy aggrivating. Without a doubt the best feature of this game by far is the un-install option......

If this game was sold with a price tag of £0.00, you would still feel ripped off.

Actually, if you paid

Actually, if you paid attention to the "MORE OPTIONS" button during installation, you'd realize you can chose where to install it.

HELLO

Its so sad you had to go through all the hell, I've had both FSX and Vista since they came out, obviously when something like this comes out you gotta go through some teething issues, fortunately I did have one only.Since then it's bliss...show me anything that can match FSX...,we shall take it from there. Remember these two programs have standards when it comes to machines you operate them on, to get the best out of them...you need the best machines the market can offer....stick to cheaper simulators if you cant afford the best.FSX rocks!

wow peon your noobiness astounds me

UPDATE: I have since upgraded my computer since this review. As I am amazing at video games, I have actually WON quite a bit of nice hardware - including a QX6850 (@3.2GHz, 1600FSB), 680i mobo, 8800GTX...

Being the nice, objective, geek that I am (and that I WANT to like this game, who doesn't wanna fly around and stuff...) I went ahead and reinstalled to try this piece of shit out again.

I turned up all the sliders (as my computer is fucking amazing), and was ready to be 'wow'd.

I was greeted with piss all over my screen - piss in the same shape and color as before on my loser-computer. Microsoft - please stop peeing on, in, and around my monitor.

Needless to say I am not planning on spending anywhere above $0.00 to 'upgrade' from my keyboard, mouse, or xbox controller so that I don't have to hold shift and alt while tapping f7 and f8 in succession in order to "go forward".

Go ahead and rock the 'there's nothing else better' argument in favor of FSX - as long as you are locked away in your computer room playing by YOURSELF (ie, away from me) I am a happy camper. Just don't come here and preach how FSX is some godly incarnation of Flight Sim-y-ness or that WONT just be Microsoft's urine all over your computer's display.
