Yarrr, the battle of thepiratebay has begun!

Thepiratebay.com seems to have been raided! This is one of the very few large-scale bittorrent trackers left and it is a sad day to see it go. Both thepiratebay staff and a Swedish political group that seems to have stemmed in large part from them say they will be back up in due time as they will fight this because there is no legal basis for such a raid per Swedish law.

For more articles on TPB's raid, see their news links page.

The law enforcement seems to have taken large numbers of servers, many of which were not hosting anything to do with TPB content, including those used to host the piratbyran or 'pirate party' political party webpages. TPB is an arm of a much larger hosting company Rix|Port80.

TPB claims they will seek punitive damages from the Swedish Govt for stepping their bounds, as allowed under Swedish law.

UPDATE: Solid article at slyck.com. The most amusing to me is tward the end;

    “The tragic circumstance, (probably typical of illegal actions by legal authorities), is that the most damage is done to people and companies who have nothing whatsoever to do with the matter at hand. I am thinking of the customers of PRQ. The least damage was done to TPB. As I take it, they have bought new servers, installed back-ups and are already up and running tests in at least one foreign server centre. Perhaps their down time is shorter than any of the other PRQ customers affected.”
