How to Avoid Getting Pulled Over for SpeedingNobody enjoys seeing the red and blue lights telling them to pull over. Getting pulled over for speeding always seems to happen at the worst time. You're running late for one reason or another and the last thing you need is another delay, especially a delay with a fine on top of it. The thing that most speeders don't realize is that there are plenty of ways to limit your risk of getting a ticket while speeding. While we definitely don't advocate poor or dangerous driving, we do realize there are often legitimate reasons you are speeding, and that a lot of speeders are also good drivers who would never intentionally put other people at risk. There are several ways to avoiding both getting pulled over and getting a ticket once you've already been pulled over (which you can find more about tomorrow @ www.desinc.net). None are fail safe, but all of these tips will decrease your odds of getting a ticket significantly: 1) Stay alert! If you are going to speed, you need to be much more aware than everyone else on the road typically is. Not only do you need to pay more attention to what other drivers are doing for your safety and theirs, but you also need to WATCH for police. They have very predictable hiding spots, the most common of which on a freeway is the on ramp. Every on ramp you go by, especially ones that have less traffic, you should glance over your shoulder and look for a hiding patrol car. If you see one, don't panic and slam on your brakes! This will not only put you in danger of a crash, but it will make you quite noticeable to the officer, especially if your tires squeal or you lose control. Instead, immediately release the gas petal and downshift (take off overdrive if you're in an automatic). This will drop your speed rapidly, but not nearly as noticeably to the officer, and usually he will be looking ahead of him rather than to his side where you are. The same goes for a cop you notice coming up on you in traffic. Be aware of the cars both in front and behind you. If you see a car approach rapidly from afar and then disappear into the slower lanes, make sure it wasn't a cop. This is a very typical maneuver because they are betting you were not paying attention and they are then able to sneak up on you without you slowing down. I always play it safe and slow down when someone rapidly comes up on me while I'm speeding. Even if it is not a cop, it will be to your advantage to let the speeder who wants to drive much faster than you go by. Hopefully they will catch any speed traps up ahead and let you sail on by. 2) Get to know what Police headlights look like in your rear view mirror. They are very distinct and this skill can help you be a lot safer from tickets at night. I find the best way to learn what they look like is to stay more alert when you are not speeding and 'guess' which ones are police, you will get better and better over time. Remember police often use a few different types of cars and may differ state to state. The most common and easiest to spot are the infamous "Crown Victoria Interceptors". Also be aware that motorcycle cops often travel in pairs and are trained to ride side by side to intentionally look like a large truck or SUV to the speeder looking in the rear view mirror. 3) Get a radar detector. They are worth every penny to the speeder who travels a lot. I have a very nice "Escort Passport 8500 X50" and recommend it to everyone! It is a wonderful detector and has saved myself and friends easily 10 times it's cost in tickets. It can give you a very early warning for all bands of radar and even can help you out with laser as well. You can pick one of these units up for about $300.00 retail. I HIGHLY recommend the Escort Passport 8500 series or the Valentine One radar detectors. They are far superior to the cheapo $50-100 detectors that you see. If you really can't afford the Escort or Valentine One, most cheap detectors will at least give you a little warning when police are about and using their radar frivolously. While the radar detector is a wonderful device that can help you to avoid tickets, it is absolutely imperative that you do not rely on it 100%. Most radar detector users gradually become careless with my other tips and still get tickets. You need to take ALL of these tips into consideration and use them all together to successfully avoid tickets.
4) Trust your gut. When you feel like it's a good idea to slow down, do it! I've found that my "hunches" that a police officer is around are often founded and save me tickets when I listen to them. A true ticket-avoiding speeder will develop a strong sense of when and where police are and should always trust this spider sense. 5) There may be a local news channel that displays where the police will be setting up speed traps for the day. See if you can catch the news in the morning before you go speeding to work and just avoid the area they are setting up. If your local news doesn't give you this information or you miss it, expect to be traveling at the speed limit and give yourself enough time to compensate. 6) If you have a friend you expect might be traveling in the area you spot a speed trap, give them a call. This could save your friend a ticket, and hopefully they will do the same for you next time they spot a speed trap where you might be headed. Many of my lead-footed friends will give me a call if they spot speed traps on my usual routes, and I do the same for them. 7) If you are certain a cop has spotted you and will be turning around to come after you, you have two choices. First, you can slow down to just above the speed limit and drive very safely until you get pulled over. It will usually at least limit the ticket you receive, if not completely avoid it. Or, if you really think you could be in trouble (going in excess of 30 over the speed limit and you think he has a radar of it, or he could legitimately claim you were recklessly driving), you should speed up as much as reasonable and get off the road at the next area you know. Once you get off the main road find a reasonable hiding spot such as an empty driveway, turn off your car and duck. Be very careful to not step on or hit your brake petal as it will turn the brake lights on even if the car is off and make sure you didn't kick up lots of dust pulling in. If you can't find a good hiding spot, or if you know some back roads, it is reasonable to just take them to another area that you don't expect the police will follow you to. Be wary of this option though. I have done this and found that I angered the officer enough for him to speed around an entire neighborhood until he spotted me miles away from where he originally got a radar on me. However, I got lucky and the client I was visiting was drunk, irate, and screaming at the police officer who was driving around the neighborhood at 80-90MPH. The police officer didn't want to deal with the drunkard and was in the wrong driving near schools at such a high rate of speed. He scolded me with his finger, but didn't stop. I got lucky, but realized that it may not be the best thing to avoid an officer unless you are certain you can get away.

First of all, great informative page. Should be required reading after taking your license test. A few comments i had:
1. Getting away from a cop is hard unless you are luckily close to and exit or turn off. Sometimes ive found that when i see a cop turning around to come get me, that to just pull over and wait to see if he comes up behind you will get you out of a ticket a lot of times. Even if he does pull behind you with the lights on i guess they appreciate you recognizing that you did something wrong. But if you know the area and are close to a turn off speed like hell and try to get away! You are speeding already anyway! (unless of course they are behind you with the lights on.)
2. Learning to spot police car headlight and taillights at night is priceless. They love to come creeping up. Look at every car in the other lane and the ones approaching to stay aware of your surroundings. Its a great habit. Police drive alot of cars. Ive seen them rollin in crown vics, impalas, mustangs, chargers, taurus, blazers, Evos, eclipses, camaros, even old school impalas and some other pimped out rides. (no joke, im talkin camo paint with dark tint, chrome rims, and the silhouette of a cage visible through the back window with a govt service tag for a plate. Always check the plates but dont rely on it. Ive seen constables pull people over with standard plates on the car.
3. If driving down the highway and you see a trooper on the other side of the median slow down on your side. if you see 2 seriously do the speed limit. I traverse the I-40 to nashville in TN alot and troopers will sit in the middle of the highway in groups of about 4 or 5 cruisers and take turns pulling people over. They love it. I swear they do it every day.
4. Watch out at the bottom of big hills. its easy money for cops because no-one is going to do 55 down a mile of 30 degree grade.
Ive heard things, cant you get pulled over for flashing your lights at oncoming motorists? also, having your bright lights on where other traffic is present IS illegal in my state. we have to lower them here. Is that true everywhere?
Avoid a Speeding Ticket
If the speed limit is 55mph, you can do a maximum of 64mph. Never go over 70mph is a 55mph zone. If the speed limit is 65mph, you can do a maximum of 75. Never go over 80 in a 65mph zone. If the speed limit is 70, you can go a maximum of 80mph. Never go over 80 - EVER!... This works for me, even when the trooper are sitting on the side of the highway. KNOW YOUR SPEED ZONES!
Okay Question...
I had a couple friends with me and we were following another friend. Needless to say we were speeding a bit and my friend decided to stick his head out the window to wave at our friends in front. A cop pulls out, without lights. We turn off, and go hide in a parking lot. Later I drive my friends back to where their car is, and i see that the cop has my friend that was in front of me pulled over. I turn off again, the cop takes the wrong way, then turns around to follow me. No lights. I speed off and get home, safely. I then talk to my friend who said that the cop told him to tell his friend that next time he sees me, he'll pull me over, and like my friend in front of me, give me a warning. I was stupid to run from the cops in the first place, but can i now get a ticket since it already happened and they didn't catch me? They didn't get my license plate, but they know what kind of car I drive...I'm very worried because my father would kill me...Also, I have no background records or anything. I've never had a ticket, or done anything illegal...

Take 'em to court
If all your excuses fail and you get a speeding ticket, make a court case out of it whenever possible. It get's the cop off the street and you get a second chance to argue your case in traffic court- occasionally you win one. Sometimes the cop doesn't show up so you should get it dismissed. Taking it to traffic court takes most of the profit out of the ticket for the gov't. Court time is expensive, so even if you have to pay up they barely break even on it. Another Tip
Another tip for when you see a cop is to lightly brake until you are about to pass the cop. This does two things:
-Since the cop can't see your brake lights, he doesn't see that you are slowing down
-It skews his radar results

These are pretty generic
Most of these tips are generic they will help but avoid a ticket. The getting off the road one around where i live will get your ass in jail if they bust you. no matter what unless your smart about it. Quick duck off the highway on a sideroad go down about a 1/4 mile then just stop if the officer wants you enough he'll give chase and if he stops you and asks why you ran just tell him you were pulling over to a safer spot than on the side of the highway because you've heard of alot of accidents in the area involving vehicles on the side of the road. That has gotten me a few warnings and nothing more because usually the officers respect the fact you considered not only your own safety but thiers as well. Also around where i live an officer has to be able to prove how fast you were going so if hes insistant on giving you a ticket ask to see the radar readout most cops just stop there as they often are just going by thier own speed to judge yours but with some of the new incar radar systems thats not always true, occasionally it'll be a gullable rookie tho and ask when was the last time the gun was calibrated i know here where i live they have to be calibrated once a week or so and then say you believe the radar gun is incorrect. Most rookies will just appologize and let you go. I've had a few do that it's pretty funny acctually.
Some deserve it, some don't
The a-hole in the Ford Lightning pickup that almost rammed me from behind (60+ on a 40 mph road) deserves to be pulled over and cited.
People who aggressively speed and weave in and out of cars to get ahead - they deserve to be pulled over and cited.
People who accelerate to pass a slowpoke, people forced to go fast to legitimately keep up with traffic, people who are fatigued a bit and creep up a few mph beyond the speed limit - those are the folks who should catch a break.

People should get out of the way if they are blocking a passing lane situation. If some one comes up on your ass at 3 times your speed and you had, and have an option to be in the left lane as opposed to the right (passing lane) than you should definitely get out of the way. more importantly you shouldn't have been in the way in the first place. it should be a rule as it is in Europe, that if your blocking the passing lane you should be fined, cited whatever.
You're dumb.
If someone comes up behind you at 150% of your speed, you need to make your best effort to get the heck out of their way. Maybe they're trying to get to the hospital--you don't know. If you can't move over, speed up until you can.
Slower traffic increases traffic density and is actually more dangerous because more cars are packed into the same amount of space. If you would have gotten hit, it would have been your fault.
If I have time (and I frequently do) and I pass a retard (look it up) like you, I get in front of them and either slam on the brakes or gradually slow to 50% of their speed. They learn pretty quickly how safe it is for the person in front of them to be driving slowly.

*You're* Dumb
If someone is significantly speeding, it is NOT your responsibility to get out of their way. If they want to drive like that, they can pass. And if they hit you, it is very much their fault, not yours.
How childish can you be? If you're going to speed, it's your responsibility to find a way through traffic, not everyone else's to drive as fast as you. You are the one who should be taught the lesson, not them.
Oh that's right...
I forgot that streets weren't meant as public thoroughfare's but rather nice picnic areas where people can kick back, relax and take there time.
I'm not talking about reckless speed. I'm talking about being just as considerate if not more so to people behind you (since you are putting them at risk--not vice versa) as you are cautious of people in front of you.
Everybody complains about tailgaters but the real problem is the slow people who do not allow others to pass. Just because the speed limit is 40 MPH doesn't mean it's not safe to drive 60. It only means that there's probably an idiot in front of you who won't get out of your way and that you'll be fined if you're caught driving that speed.
Traveling in a pack
My father was a police officer back the early days of radar. I asked him if 5 or 6 cars are running together and speeding, how do you decide who gets the ticket?
He said, throw on the lights and come up behind the pack, the first one that pulls over gets the ticket. Sad but true.
More suggestions
1. The suggestion to be alert is very important. One thing to look for is when the drivers ahead of you suddenly slow down, especially when they're on a curve or the top of a hill. Also, watch the oncoming traffic to see if they are driving slower than normal.
2. Remember the universal signal of "Cops Ahead" is three flashes of the headlights.
3. Get to know where the cops like to set up radar traps in your area. In general there are limited places where they can set up and be reasonably hidden. When you know where these are, just drive slower in those places. Look for patterns, such as where they set up at the beginning of the month and end of the month.
4. If you're on a highway and the cop driving near you gets off at an exit: LOOK OUT! One of their regular tricks is to get off and fool you into thinking the danger is gone. They re-enter the highway within the next minute and come up behind you.
5. When pulled over, the cops always ask you if you know how fast you were going. This is a trap. If you tell them your speed, then they can say in court that you admitted to speeding. If you say you don't know how fast you were going, then they accuse you of not watching your speedometer. Either tell them you were going the speed limit or say "I was going a safe and reasonable speed." This may bring up a discussion of how much you are lying, but at least you haven't admitted to any wrongdoing, and thereby earning an automatic ticket. (The same rules apply here as they do in any negotiation: He who specifies a number first, LOSES.)
6. If the cop starts asking lots of questions, you can politely refuse to answer and then ask "Am I free to go?" Most people think they can't leave until the cop dismisses them. This is partially true. You don't have to take question after question, you can ask to be dismissed. Unless he has a reasonable suspicion that there is another crime being committed besides speeding, he can't hold you if you ask to be dismissed, he has to say "Yes you can go." As long as you don't provide any probable cause, he has no lawful reason to keep you and must dismiss you when you ask.
I completely disagree with
I completely disagree with not telling the truth about your speed. If you admit you were speeding and apologize, you are MUCH more likely to get a warning than a ticket. If you lie, that is like a slap in the face to the cop, and you SHOULD get a ticket. If you make a mistake, just admit it! Cops are humans too, and USUALLY give respect back when it is given to them.
You're right, lying is bad...
... but saying that you were driving a safe and reasonable speed wouldn't be a lie unless you were driving an unsafe and unreasonable speed. Local statutes do not dictate what is safe and reasonable--they only indicate what the governing body thinks is about 10 MPH slower than what an engineer recommended.
So unless you were driving so fast that you were jumping over crests, bottoming out on subtle dips, flying off the road where ever it turns and playing bumper cars with your fellow motorists, you are driving a safe and reasonable speed.
My Favorite
When pulled over for speeding recite the following:
"I'm so sorry officer, I know I was speeding, but could you escort me to a restroom before writing me a ticket. If I don't get to a restroom quickly I'm gonna embarass both of us."
They'll either let you go immediately, or follow you to a restroom. If they follow you to the restroom just stay in there for a very long time. They probably won't be there when you come out anyway. They understand that sometimes "$hit happens".
If they let you go, whatever you do, DO NOT PASS A BATHROOM WITHOUT STOPPING!!

Cop cars in the US are ALWAYS American cars. I have never seen any exceptions.
Bumper stickers, licence plate frames, dealer insignias, etc. are a good indication that the Crown Vic (or other car) you've come up behind is being driven by some geezer and not a cop.

its true, the most obvious tell for an undercover cop is whether or not his car is domestic. HOWEVER:
some cops have their own cars they setup, but this is rare, and much more common in wealthy areas.
AND there are actually as many undercover cop cars that are imports as domestics. interestingly enough, they probably wont pull you over unless you are speeding waaay over the limit; why? the import undercovers are typically used for more important things such as stings. they dont want to blow their covers on you, so dont give them a reason to.

Undercover Cop Cars
I'm from Illinois and I have seen cops use Chevy Cameros and Ford Mustangs as undercover cars.

The drafting trick
"drafting" other speeders at about 1/4th a mile works great alot of the times. Unless theres on cop sitting on an overpass tagging you, and 4 shooting down the on-ramp to get people in packs.
Ducking tricks only work if you can do it casually. If your on a highway, and you pass a cop parked on the side of the road, and as you pass him, he starts the car rolling. CASUALLY move over and get off at the next exit. This only works if you can get there with a bit of space between oyu and him, and theres enough traffic for him to lose you for a brief moment.
Oh, and my favorite trick for peopole with realitivly clean records, and just got pulled over. Dont be suspicious, dont be rude. First casually ease of the gas, dont slam on the breaks. Blatent admission of guilt. Second, look for a spot where you and the cop can comfortably park, and he can walk up to your car without having to stick his neck on the highway. If you have a radar detector, take it down and quietly stick it somewhere he wont see it. If you polite to the officer, and just the right mixture of clueles without being stupid, and sorry for the mistake, he might just give you a warning.
The clueless bit works!
A month or so ago I got pulled over pulling into a parking lot. I was cornering to maintain speed and control which meant I was also drifting into oncoming lanes. I was being very attentive and made sure oncoming lanes did not equate with oncoming traffic.
Anyway, this cop follows me into the parking lot and flashes his lights as I pull into a parking spot. I stay seated, roll down my window and let him approach. We went through the usual--license and proof of insurance.
When he asked me if I knew to what I owed the pleasure of our little visit, I honestly replied that I did not. I hadn't been speeding and was pretty sure that I was on private property when he pulled me over. Also, by this point I was a couple of blocks removed from the infraction.
He lead me through the charges and demanded to know what my motivation could have been. I thought he was referring to my entrance into the parking lot so I explained that half of the entrace is very steep so I use the exit half for entering as well. I wasn't very apologetic because again I was pretty certain that the parking lot constituted private property.
A look of confusion swept over his face for a moment before he reiterated his charge--this time belaboring the point that he was describing the turn previous to my entering the parking lot. Without remorse, I explained that one of the roads at that intersection was in poor repair and had a number of potholes (I did not think to mention how crowded the narrow road can get with cars parked on both sides of it--I usually drive down the middle of that road to buy some extra time in case some kid chases a ball out from between the parked cars but I digress).
A grimace once again betrayed the ill-concealed feeling of disgust the cop had for my ineptitude. He drew a deep breath to ready himself for one more attempt to penetrate my stupor but then thought better of it. He warned me to stay on my side of the road and returned to his vehicle shaking his head and mumbling.
As I walked out the remainder of my journey, I realized that I had been so focused on the approach to the previous turn that it didn't occur to me how heinous my departure from said turn must have appeared to those who care about such things. Oh well.

I remember a friend of mine knew in front where they would be with their speed guns. He honked the horn and waved to them. He should have known not to humiliate Dutch Police officers. He was fined for honking the horn without necessity....

TURN LEFT!
If you're going to try ducking, always TURN LEFT. If the officer loses his visual he will assume you turned right. This is not a dumb assumption because he knows that in a panic people will turn right 9 times out of 10.

... but I think the author meant to perform the evasive maneuvering before the cop's cherries are lit. Afterwards, you're resisting arrest.

Based on your atrocious 3th grade spelling, your "misdominer" is probably the least of the problems on your resume, buddy.
Tips
If you plan to try the "hide in a driveway" tip, you should get out of the car and start walking away if the cop is not in sight yet. Getting caught ducking in the car looks suspicous no matter what, but if you're just strolling down the sidewalk whistlin' dixie then you look much less suspicous and can deny even driving a car that day if asked.
Funny thing that helps/works sometimes is if the cop is doing a U-turn to get to you, do a U-turn too as quick as you can, then duck into some other road and hual ass. The cop will be delayed again as they have to do a 2nd U-turn (possibly waiting for traffic to clear) to catch up. This can buy you precious seconds to hide.
And always, if you SEE the flashing lights, game over, pull to the side of the road and take your punishment. Trying to evade the cops when the lights are flashing can end up getting you some charges much more serious than a ticket. If you try to get away before the lights come on, then you're technically not evading the police (you were just in a hurry to get somewhere, but when you saw lights you pulled over like a good law obiding citizen).

HIGHWAYS
I (Minnesota driver) got tagged in Wisconsin and had pulled over immediately. I had stopped the car before the cop got onto the highway. There was no chase and no effort for the officer to do his job. My license had expired by a couple days and I was given a warning.
Other tips I have be given:
1. Refer to cop as "officer"
2. Speed no more than 11 mph over the speed limit on highways. This does not work on residential streets.
Minnesota: how much over is too much over...
My mom is a police dispatcher here in Minnesota and she once told me that the fine for 1-9 miles over is the same so if I'm going to drive 1 over, I may as well drive 9. I'm not sure here logic affects whether or not a ticket is issued or not--'m just sayin'.
"Officer" is a bit generic.
"Officer" is a bit generic. Try other, more specific titles if know enough to get it right. If he has stripes on his sleeves, call him "Sergeant"; he might appreciate the recognition. If they're from the county Sheriff's dept, call 'em "Deputy".
I heard that if you are
I heard that if you are going the same speed as another car, that is it illegal for a cop to single you out between the two. They either must pull you both over, or get you for something else. True?

For one if you try to use this excuse the cop will just get pissed at you. any arguing with cop will definatly get you a ticket. just shut up take the punishment and go to cort to get it switched to a non moveing violation. also the law might be diffrent in diffrent states. but the cop could easaly say that you were going faster then the othere guy. or they could be like a couple cops i have seen that when they have a trap set up will step in to the road and flag down every one that is speeding and write them all tickets then go back and do the same again. funny as hell watching one cop pull over 15 people at a time. Also dont speed unless you halve to and if you do get pulled over dont be an ass to the cop.

This is NOT true. Perhaps the laws vary state by state, but I have been on the lucky end of this more than once. Maybe it's just a technicality, since if they can't pull you over for speeding, they can still pull you over for reckless driving. This is the principle of red cars getting more speeding tickets - if the cop has to make a decision between two cars going the same speed, he will usually choose to pull over the nicer/more distinctive car.
Obviously, if the officer tells you to pull over with the megaphone, then you should probably comply, or if you think he might have gotten your plates, but if he lights up the other car without a word, you can usually safely drive off and thank your lucky stars.
How to Avoid Getting Pulled Over for Speeding
Two other great speeding tips (not that I advocate speeding) usually apply at night. Watch the traffic as far ahead on the highway as possible. If you notice alot of break lights being depressed in a particular area there may be a cop ahead. People usually brake momentarily, even if they aren't speeding, when a cop is discovered. Look for the lights towards the middle and fast lanes. Avoid relying on right lane break lights as an early warning. Those lights will usually be cars exiting the highway. Also keep your left peripheral vision attentive to cars on the opposite side of the highway flashing their highbeams. This is usually a clear indication that a cop may be ahead for drivers on the other side. Flashing highbeams does NOT mean that your lights need to be turned on. Drivers wouldn't be able to tell from behind you if it were for drivers on that side of the highway. That usually applies to 2 lane streets.
Essential tip you missed...
First of all, great list. I already do most of them by habit, but that's only after receiving my fair share of tickets. You did leave out what I consider to be the most essential tip for speeding on the highway, and that is ALWAYS DRIVE WITH THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC. ALWAYS. The minute you stand out, the trooper/highway patrol will notice you. If everybody in the fast lane is going 85, go 85. If they're going 75, go 75. The key to getting away with speeding on the highway is not to stand out at all. That means in addition to going with the flow, you should not make any unsafe or quick lane changes or make yourself noticeable in any way. Cops are trained to notice erratic driving of any sort and generally make a beeline for it. That's my $0.02, and I haven't gotten pulled over since I started doing this.

I drive faster than I should, and faster than most others on the road, especailly at night (I think you will find most habitual speeders do so between 10:00 and 5:00). What I have found is this:
Even if a cop knows you are speeding, (s)he will be exponentially less interested in you if you DEMONSTRATE COURTIEOUS DRIVING. This means, don't ever, ever, make them slow down to pass you; don't pass on the right, don't drive aggressively. If you follow all the uspoken, and generally negelected rules of the road, and pull into the right lane to let the cop pass you way before they ever get there (cops always speed, for obvious reasons), they will let you get away with 25-30mph over the speed limit instead of the usual 10-15.
If you want to do much more than that, you have to start using shields. Drive along until you find another speed deamon and then let them get half a mile ahead of you, they will clear out the lurking cops and all you have to worry about is your rear view.
Night time speeding.
Getting ticketed at night is probably my biggest beef. It is impossible to speed recklessly at night unless you really are inebriated or intentionally trying to get into an accident and it should be painfully obvious to anyone watching (no one because everyone else is asleep) if either of these scenarios are the case.
First of all, there is no traffic eliminating 95% of things a responsible speeder could run into.
Second, the few people that are on the road have their lights on and you can see the from miles away and around corners and behind hills (I agree that people without their lights on should be pulled over and strongly encouraged to rectify their mistake--not necessarily punished--sometimes a brother forgets yo).
Third, one of the times I got pulled over was at 11:00PM on the freeway. At the time, I regularly traversed that stretch of road and knew it was routine to travel 10 miles over the speed limit in broad daylight near rush hour. This, in spite of the fact that it was a "construction zone".
In case you can't tell, I have a certain disdain for the phrase, especially in this instance. Construction zones kill far more motorists than construction workers because they cause sudden unnecessary reductions in speed (which increase traffic density which in turn causes accidents). This particular scenario is worsened by the fact that the "construction" (remember it's 11:00 PM--the last construction worker left hours beforehand) took place 40 feet away across the divide in the highway.
I didn't fancy my chances with a judge (and didn't really have the time to make a court appearance) so I payed a double fine for driving the same speed as I did during the day in much heavier traffic. All that to say that my third point isn't that strong an argument against night-time traffic law enforcement but it does make me hate 'em all the more.

We've done a lot though and the server is serving most of the page requests... albeit sometimes taking 20-30 seconds. Anywho, we're going to start using another machine we have colocated for other tasks to remove some of the load from this server... That wont happen till tomorrow though.

Or, use the time to leave a bit earlier, and not have to speed, thereby having a safer and less stressful drive, and saving fuel. Sheesh...There's no point speeding for speed's sake.
get a radio
One thing that has saved me countless times is my CB radio. Nothing like having a mile or two of warning to avoid those radar traps set up on the other side of a blind hill or curve. Well worth the 300 or so a good setup will cost.

Ok, i figured I'd clear up the last tip since a whole lot of talk on the places I posted this story (digg and fark namely) think I am saying to just flat ass run from the cops.
That is simply not the case. I am just saying that if you pass a cop and think he is going to turn around, get off the road your on! If you're really worried, yea park... empty driveways can work well. I know a lot of people who have "gotten away" with this one. I obviously have, but it was narrowly and I'm sure I have a police officer out there now who wants my nuts. However, there are times where if you were to get pulled over for speeding excessively you might lose your licence and/or car. It could be worth the risk.
I'm not telling you to break the law. I'm telling you to bend it and that you'd damn better well get away with it or you're going to be worse off.

As much as I know that the police is a necessary branch in any society, and as much as logic implies that I should be thankful and appreciative, I just can't!
I've never ran across a decent cop! Ok maybe once or twice but I am sure they had reasons to be nice. They really lack compassion and act like mindless trolls. They love repeating themselves and they love quoting from their little bible (they use a script because it works, without dabbling into the specifics of a situation). Unless you're a hot chick, good luck! And that's just being a regular guy ... I know that, BUT there's more. Like the majority of people joining the service (Any branch), they are confused about life, and the service seems like a good way out. They love being told what to do, when to do and they don't ask questions. They are robots at best! When they’re cruising in their shitty Crown Vics they see themselves as action heroes as opposed to public servants. Some people need to be directed and lead a brainless, boring and ultimately vapid life, others are innovators, and they welcome the challenge and the struggle. So we need competent leadership for our brutes. You just can’t dress people in Batman outfits and expect them not to abuse their power.

I do speed from time to time, but at no point have I dismissed its legality because I didn't get caught. "You're not caught unless you get caught."
I got noticed by a cop doing
I got noticed by a cop doing an illegal u-turn. I sped down the road, turned onto a side road and turned off my lights. The cop had enough time to see that I had turned, so he found me in no time. My effective excuse: I didnt know I was being "chased" and I was traveling to my friends house (on the side road I pulled off onto)...to cover my ass in case he said I tried running from him. He gave me a warning for the illegal u-turn and sent me off. He believed every word I said. I guess this was my lucky break.

If a cop sees you speeding along at 70-75 mph, and the car just above you is doing 80, geuss who's gonna get pulled over?
Not necessarily...
If you're going over the speed limit but someone else is going faster, doesn't that just make you an easier catch? Unless the other driver is going significantly faster, they're going to get just as much money out of a ticket from you as they would the other driver.
Money + Speeding Tickets = Vicious Cycle.
The parties that preside over a law should not derive any benefit from punishments carried out under the law. It's called a conflict of interest and yet it happens all too often on our streets and in our courtrooms. Monies from speeding tickets, et. al. should go to building more lanes, bridges and other efficiencies so that citizens are less inclined to drive aggressively--they should not go to some uppity judge and his police cohort who bust people to perpetuate a flawed system.
